The art of creating an eclectic interior design scheme…👩🎨
We’ve all seen beautiful room designs where different styles, patterns and colour schemes are nonchalantly mixed up to create an interior design masterpiece. All the interior design rules seem to be broken and yet the scheme is so fresh, stylish and cool. You know it shouldn’t work….but it just does!
Welcome to the wonderful world of eclectic interior design!
Here are some tips for putting together an eclectic room scheme in your own home:
🎨 limit your colour palette
Let the individual elements take centre stage. I find a white or neutral background is perfect for showing off key pieces. This ensures your room will feel coherent. Remember, the idea is not to create a busy ‘maximalist’ design here. Your room and the individual elements need space to breathe.
🛋️ are you a newbie to mixing up different design genres?
I adore the juxtaposition between traditional & minimalist. Combining different genres is an easy way to ease yourself into creating your own eclectic space.
For example, placing a contemporary abstract art piece in a period setting is a great way to combine different styles. Check out some great modern and abstract prints here
📐 pay attention to scale
Don’t be afraid to mix up proportions!
For example, an ornate supersize vintage chandelier looks great alongside a dainty minimalist /contemporary coffee table or sofa.
⚖️ create the right balance between contemporary & period
Mixing different styles within the same scheme works brilliantly if there’s an equal number of pieces used. The idea is to look calm and cohesive.
😜 Above all, enjoy your space and don’t take it too seriously! The best eclectic room schemes are often those which feel relaxed and not too considered. Your interior space should spark joy, not only for others, but for you. Have fun!
