I love a chandelier💡 They add drama and a real ‘wow!’ to your room – the ultimate statement piece.
I’m lucky to have worked in some beautiful period homes with grand features and super-high ceilings which cry out for a chandelier! Also, there are some awesome contemporary chandeliers which will look great in more modern settings (West Elm have a fab range)
Whatever you choose, check out my top 3 tips for selecting the perfect chandelier!
💡 will your chandelier suit the size of your room?
Your choice of lighting is foremost determined by the size of your room. It needs to be large enough to make an impact & not be swallowed up by the room (nothing worse that a too-small statement piece!). If in doubt – always go bigger!
A simple formula to use is:
Room width (ft) + room length (ft) = chandelier diameter (inches)
Height of room (ft) x 2.5 or 3 = chandelier height
💡 check the hanging height
Make sure it hangs at least 7 ft (8 ft if your ceiling is taller) from the floor to avoid any chandelier associated head injuries!! 🤕
💡what is the style of your room?
Obvious but choose a complimentary style to your room. For example, a groovy Sputnik light fitting in a mid-century room & a vintage / ornate one in a period setting.
That’s not to say things can’t be mixed up – I adore an antique chandelier in a contemporary room design (like in this kitchen). I believe it’s the age of your property that’s the anchor / reference point to any design. For example, a vintage chandelier may not look as great in a 1970’s new-build.
Also consider function. Do you want to Illuminate a whole room? Or perhaps just highlight part of it, eg, decorative lighting over dining area. 🤔
