What’s your interior style? Simple enough question right? However, there are A LOT of beautiful interiors out there and I understand how overwhelming that question can sometimes be to answer!
When working with clients, I need to identify how they want their space to look & feel pretty early on and I have a simple process to help with this.
discover your interior style in 4 steps
1) function
Firstly, before aesthetics, it’s important to properly identify the function of the area you are designing. How do you plan on using your space? Who with? At which time and what days of the week? Consider how you want to feel when you are there.
For example, if you are designing a home office, the primary function of the room is to work. Therefore, you may want to feel motivated and focused in your space. Function really is the core to your room design.
2) lifestyle
Delve into your lifestyle. Do you have hobbies? What’s your favourite season? Holiday destination? Think about colours or styles you associate with the things you enjoy and makes you feel good.
These answers are always super helpful. For example, if autumn makes your heart sing, you love baking and your idea of heaven is curling up in front of a wood burner, you may find yourself attracted to a more muted palette (think mossy greens and ochres) and organic home spun textures.
3) interior images
Next I encourage you (plus partner/family members etc.) to pick out interiors images you like. These could be on Pinterest, Instagram, interior design magazines (Living Etc. is one of my favourites for this). Consider what it is you like about them? Or what you don’t you like? What colours? Furniture pieces? Textures? This helps pinpoint your interior likes and dislikes!
4) about your home
Lastly look at your home, the age of your property & it’s history. Do you want to incorporate this into your design?
Gather this information to create a mood / concept board (see image) and use this as the key reference point to your room design. There may be a tweak or two but generally I’ve found this method really gets into the heart of my clients interior style!
