House painting in Brighton
My passion is period properties and here in Brighton I’m lucky enough to regularly work inside them! Sometimes I’m also asked about the exterior, particularly what colour to paint them… Here are my thoughts and considerations when house painting my own home!
We have many period properties in Brighton, from beautiful Georgian townhouses to Victorian family homes. Some are brick whilst others, like mine, are rendered meaning we have the option of adding colour to the outside of our homes.
Of course, many of the Georgian properties in Brighton are listed and have to be maintained in colours specified by the local Heritage department at Brighton & Hove City council. Even if it were not apparently obvious, I would always strongly recommend checking these council guidelines first. For example, buildings in the Brunswick area of Hove are decorated in the mandatory ’Hove Cream’ shade.
My experience painting my own home
I’m lucky to live in a conservation area where I’m free to paint the outside of my house whatever colour I please! There are some beautiful rainbow streets around here and I have been tempted to go a bit wild with colour.
When we bought this house, it was a dull grey … being west facing, the sun hits it later in the day, so I wanted something brighter. Also, it was vital that my house colour also worked well with our cream & beige neighbours.
We opted for a light sage green which looks ace and also goes amazingly with the Victorian features. We also included a corresponding dark green front door and a strip of black ‘skirting’ to match our black step. I’ve included an image of me on the phone (as usual!), sitting on the step!
We used https://www.littlegreene.com masonry paint for our house and my other go-to is https://earthbornpaints.co.uk – both of which are particularly great for period homes.
Are you a fan of 🌈 exteriors or do you prefer to play it safe with neutrals??
