I’m lucky to live and work amongst some of the city’s fabulous period properties. Although, my work is primarily focused on the inside of clients homes, during a renovation, I’m sometimes asked to turn my attention to the outside! Here are my top 5 tips for choosing exterior paint colours for your home:
1. consider architectural style & era when choosing exterior paint
Many period properties in and around Brighton are listed or in conservation zones where specific paint colours are mandatory, so always check first.
Otherwise, the exterior paint colour you choose should feel appropriate to the style and character of the age of your home. Check out @earthbornpaints & @littlegreenepaintcompany who have some amazing period inspired paints.
2. natural colour combinations
Use the natural colours found around your property with elements such as sky, sand, trees to inspire your homes’ exterior colour palette. If you are worried about complimenting colours or shades, take a look at the outside world. Natures palette never fails.
3. follow the sun
Full sunlight intensifies colours so make a note of what parts of your home has the most sunlight and at which times of day.
For instance, you can fully expect south facing light to make paint colours look lighter than you’d expect. This light can actually enhance colours, so go bright!
However, a north facing light is a bit heavier and can subdue warm colours, flattening them out a bit. A more muted tone would work well on these exteriors.
4. be a good neighbour
I love the beautiful rainbow streets found all over Brighton. If this is your bag, obvious as it sounds, choose colours to compliment your neighbours either side. Contrast is great but ensure the colours don’t clash.
5. front door statement
Some people feel nervous using bright colours but a door is a much smaller commitment and an area where you can have fun. Go mad, express your personality & make a great first impression. Once you feel braver, you may even decide you want a bolder look for the rest of your house.
