Thinking of giving your front door a lift for the spring? Unlike exterior house painting, which can involve extensive scaffolding (and then result in expensive mistakes if you dislike the result!), painting your front door is and area you can have fun with. Its less invasive so if you get bored, it’s a weekends work to change.
Here are some paint colour ideas for a fab front door!
plan!
Firstly, it’s a good idea to check local planning restrictions, particularly if your home is listed or in a conservation area. If you have a period property, you may want to stick to classic door colours like grey or black. If you want to go wild with colour, its also good etiquette to mention this first to your neighbours (less face it , they will be the ones having to look at it!)
protect!
The most welcoming front door can loose its wow if its not protected from the elements. Choose an exterior paint that has a UV resistant formula and provides protection against cracking. Valspar do a great range of exterior paint with UV protection.
colour!
Consider the character of your home and the materials its made from so your exterior acts as an accent to the interior of your home. If you have a brick home colours sitting on the opposite sides of the colour wheel work best. Eg, if your home has red bricks, then a blue or green tone with give it oomph! Lighter sandstone volutes work fabulously with darker tones for a cool contrast.
blend!
For a more subtle colour, you can’t go wrong with shades that blend with tones around it like paving, brick or woodwork. Taking cues from nature with greens or blues is also a good way to harmonise your door colour with the rest of the world.
