A ceiling light will do far more than simply provide light in a room. It can be a statement piece, zone certain areas or provide mood and warmth / ambiance to an otherwise cool or unwelcoming space. This is why choosing the perfect ceiling light is imperative to a room scheme.
Here are my top 3 things to consider when choosing a new ceiling light fitting.
💡 height & drop of your ceiling light
There should be at least 2.2 metres between the floor & bottom of the fitting to avoid head bumps! Be aware of the lights total length and whether it can be adjusted.
💡 what you want from this light?
Is it a purely decorative statement or practical task lighting? Generally, I allow for 25 watts of light in total for every square meter. I tend to use a combination of different light fittings to achieve this, e.g, ceiling, floor and table lamps. This also provides layers of light for ambiance.
It’s a good idea to have some dimming control on the ceiling light fitting, so the light level can be adjusted to suit.

💡 proportion
Obvious I know, but select the right sized light for your room! Too big will dominate and too small will look lost. Are there any doors which open onto the space which could obstruct a pendant light? Also, some low ceilings may not be suitable for a pendant at all, in which case, flush or semi flush lights may be a better option.
In an open plan space, I often use specific lighting to zone different areas of the room (e.g, low pendant lights over dining area). It’s important to consider sight lines & views elsewhere in the room.
